Several flood defenses close on Thursday at high tide at sea and in rivers

Rijkswaterstaat will close several flood defenses on Thursday. Due to storm Pia, the coast is experiencing high sea water levels. At the same time, the water level in the rivers is also high due to a lot of rain in Germany and meltwater from the Alps.

Water boards work together on sustainability.

Together with the Drents Overijsselse Delta Water Board, we have again put out to tender the purchase of sustainable diesel. HVO100 reduces CO2 emissions by 90% compared to normal diesel. Our water board uses 640,000 liters of diesel per year. This therefore makes a significant difference in CO2 emissions.

Construction of a new pumping station at the Groningen Zoutkamp will be a feat.

The construction of the new pumping station at the Groningen Zoutkamp will be a major feat. The construction site borders the monumental Hunsingo lock, the heavily used N388 along the old sea dike and the water of the Hunsingo Canal. A lot of work has gone into, and last week the closure of the N388 for road traffic and the Hunsingo Canal for shipping were lifted. This phase has therefore been successful and completed. The blockage was necessary to carry out work on the new pumping station as part of the Nieuwe Waterwerken Zoutkamp. It is expected that the N388 and the Hunsingo Canal will be closed again from the end of October and in November 2023 to carry out follow-up work for the project. Strukton is working in a construction team on this beautiful project.

National Mill and Ground Day 2023 Saturday May 13, 2023 (and/or Sunday May 14)

National Mill Day is held on the same day as National Mill Day. Every effort is made to open as many pumping stations/mills as possible to the public. Fortunately, it is possible to organize the National Mill Day/Mill Day again in 2023 on Saturday, May 13, 2023 and/or on Sunday, May 14, 2023. The Dutch Pumping Station Foundation would appreciate it if you would like to open up your pumping station(s). The pumping stations are usually open between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. In the run-up to National Pumping Day, an overview will be provided in the appendix on our website of the pumping stations that participate in National Pumping Day and are therefore open and whether, and if so, which special activities will take place. It is also indicated when the pumping station is open and whether it is also open on Sunday, May 14. Visitors are of course more than welcome!
Have a pleasant day.

Heron monitors from a gauge.

The water board occasionally receives some help with the supervision of water level management 😉. This heron monitors from a gauge. A gauge is an instrument on which you can see the level of the water in a river. The water level scale in a ditch, canal or river indicates the water level in relation to the Normal Amsterdam Level (NAP).

Waterland water level gauge installation

The installation of the water level scales for the Waterland project took place recently. Nice project, which certainly lives up to its name at the moment.

Our gauge is on TV all week, in the Flood news.

Zuiderzeeland Water Board

Every now and then something needs to be replaced. In this case it is a weir in the Zwijnstocht near Ens. With a weir we regulate the water level in ditches and canals using a valve. Then it is useful if this can be done automatically. That is also the reason why we are starting to work on the weir: once the work is completed, the weir will be controlled automatically. This makes it possible to monitor the water level even more accurately, for example during dry periods. If you are curious about how a weir works exactly or would like to know more about the work, click on read more.

Consequences of low water levels.

An employee of the Rijn en IJssel Water Board explains in a vlog what consequences the low water levels have for our dikes.

10,000 liters of water per second.

Since yesterday, the pumps at the Kolff pumping station at the Municipality of Hardinxveld-Giessendam have been running at full speed to release water into the Beneden-Linge. In this way we ensure that the level is 10 cm above the normal level and that we can meet the enormous water demand.

Milestone in Schouwerzijl.

A nice milestone this morning! In Schouwerzijl we installed this check valve as a shut-off facility in the Kromme Raken. It ensures that in extreme situations (too wet or too dry due to climate change) we can use the drainage areas of the H.D. pumping station. Louwes in Zoutkamp and De Waterwolf pumping station in Lammerburen can separate.

Water management heritage: task for the water boards?

On Tuesday, June 21, 2022, the Dutch Gemalenstichting, together with the Historical Locks and Weirs Foundation, the National Heritage Association Heemschut and STOWA, will organize the Waterstaat Heritage Day 2022. During this day we will discuss the importance of the historical heritage and the involvement of water boards in this. An important question that is raised is: how can historical heritage give substance to current water safety? In addition, various water boards show how they deal with the historical heritage.

How high is the water level?

We can do a lot automatically, but it remains important to also be able to read gauge scales.

Netherlands Aqua - the future of water management

40 mm of precipitation in the river area

Last weekend, about 40 mm of precipitation fell in the river area. Our water level managers worked all Sunday to distribute and drain the surplus water. Whenever possible, we also retain water for dry times. Due to #climatechange, we all notice that extreme weather situations are becoming more common. Do you want to know what we do to prepare for extreme weather? Then view our water management program.

Wet feet in the Netherlands without NAP

The Netherlands has been fighting to keep it dry for centuries. That is why the water level was officially recorded early on. That became the Normal Amsterdam Level, the NAP. This level is used as a water level in almost all of Europe, there under the name Amsterdam Ordenance Datum, OAD.

Historic lock in the Eemshaven is being thoroughly restored

The lock next to the De Goliath polder mill in the Eemshaven is in bad condition. The grout in particular has had a hard time over time. So it's time for a major makeover.

Restoration of water inlet at De Goliath mill has started

Today, the drying of the old lock at the De Goliath polder mill near the Eemshaven marked the start of the restoration of this water inlet. The starting act was carried out by portfolio holder Jeroen Niezen of the Noorderzijlvest Water Board and deputy Henk Staghouwer on behalf of the Province of Groningen. The restoration of this cultural-historical heritage of the water board is part of the implementation of the landscape program. These are landscape measures to compensate for the consequences of the construction of the new 380 kilovolt high-voltage line by TenneT.

Dike reinforcement Lauwersmeer-Vierhuizergat

A beautiful project commissioned by, among others, the Noorderzijlvest, Arcadis, Heijmans GMB.

Groningen's Lauwersmeerdijk is located between Lauwersoog and the Westpolder. That dike (A flood defense constructed by humans that protects an area against high water, for example from rivers or the sea.) no longer meets the safety requirements. That is why the dike must be strengthened. In this way we ensure that we also protect ourselves well against flooding in the future. When strengthening the dike, we will also be working on other projects. For example, for nature, recreation and traffic. We call these projects the linking projects. The plans for the dike reinforcement and the coupling projects are currently being developed. From 2023 we will actually start working on the dike. The visitors center was virtually opened on November 17th. You can watch this again via the YouTube channel.

All Saints Flood of 1570

It is not known exactly how many people died, but it must have been at least more than 20,000. Tens of thousands of people were left homeless and livestock and winter supplies were destroyed.

The worst disaster in pre-modern times occurred in 1570, the All Saints Flood. On November 1 of that year, the water rose even higher than it would in 1953. The first thing about this flood was that it had been warned: on the morning of the disaster, the Domain Council in Bergen op Zoom had issued a warning of "very extremely high tides". The warning did not help much: it would be the worst flood disaster in the history of our country.

Numerous dikes on the Dutch coast collapsed and the water caused complete havoc. The entire coast from Flanders to Groningen to northwest Germany was flooded. The area around Antwerp (the country of Saeftinghe, where four villages were covered in a thick layer of silt), Friesland (where more than 3,000 people died) and Zeeland were particularly hard hit. But things were actually wrong everywhere: in a letter from the Duke of Alva to King Philip II, he mentioned that no less than five-sixths of Holland was under water.

Level scales supplied for 'De Drie Polders' and 'Polder de Dijken-Bakkerom'

Delivered the gauge scales this week for 'De Drie Polders' and 'Polder de Dijken-Bakkerom'. In these two areas, among other things, work is being done on the design of water storage and nature.

What's going to happen?
For the functioning of the water storage facilities in the aforementioned two polders, a double screw pumping station, a polder pumping station, two intake structures, two automated weirs and various sheet pile walls and revetments are being constructed by De Boer & De Groot. The redesign and realization of the new structures will create a storage capacity in both areas of 1.2 and 1.1 million m3 of water respectively. The completion of our work is scheduled for the spring of 2021.
